It is a full renovation project to expand and renovate an old factory. This project has started with putting a main point on 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refine). This is a materialization of our attitude towards promoting sustainable green laboratory into an architecture. We wanted to apply structural steels and exterior walls of existing factory as much as possible. However, when you try to detach a cladding called ALC, which is commonly used in building factories, heavy machines are used. Therefore, most of them get damaged, thus making it very difficult to reuse them. Nevertheless, we have succeeded to keep about 30% of ALC by demolishing the building cautiously. We put those ALC back to the exterior was randomly and in the gaps and openings, we installed new ALC and windows to let the fresh air and light in. As a result, the exterior wall functions like a filter and the sun light shines from the unevenly positioned windows into a factory’s large opened area, which reduces lighting load in daytime. This creates rhythm and give a liveliness to a factory’s peculiar homogeneous environment.
An added value for manufacturer is shifting from a “thing” itself to more complicated solutions and services and requires connection in many senses including IoT (Internet of Things). We have planned a meeting lounge like a café in the entrance hall. So that co-creation such as industry-academia collaboration and open innovations can be developed. It was originally a one large space, but by making a loft, we have created a human sized area that is suitable for meetings. In addition, we have placed dozens of different furniture to produce liveliness and this allows you to discover your favorite space according to your feelings or the scene.
