Density for people to resonate and feel the community

Sumitomo Chemical Company, Limited Health & Crop Sciences Research Laboratory

Every year, hundreds of thousands of African children are killed by Malaria. Sumitomo Chemical's "Olyset Net" was developed by incorporating insecticide into mosquito nets that Japanese people have used since ancient times to eradicate vector mosquitoes. It received a WHO’s recommendation and saved many lives, and now this technology was donated free of charge so that it can be manufactured locally. Their achievements have been attracting world’s attention as a social and economic contribution activities, such as employment problem and gender problem.
The client's desire for the new research building was to "transmit as a flagship and as a world-class research institute in the field of health and agriculture related businesses."

Therefore, inspired by the iconic Olyset Net of the client, we designed a façade like a mosquito net which shields heat and noise, but captures light, wind and scenery as an exterior material, which protects the stability of the research environment.

As the concept of the internal space, we aimed to "make you want to walk and create community awareness" and "calculated chaos in unified space but with a wide variety”. In the lab, we try to eliminate the industrial impression that you can often see in the synthetic chemistry as much as possible. In addition, it is designed to stimulate the senses of researchers every time they move around the labs by changing the color of all labs as a space with wood texture and color.

In order to promote communication of the upper and lower floors, a living dining room, which is the size of a typical Japanese house, is installed on the middle floor to avoid the rest area to be overproduced. Also, not only the lab but also the arrangement of the space on each floor is changed to stimulate the curiosity of researchers and to naturally induce them to move up and down. The meeting room floor pursues a lively atmosphere like Nakamise (shops lining a passageway in the precincts of a shrine or temple). The design places importance on Sumitomo Chemical and Japan’s identity while showing its presence to the world.
