We made a denim lab wear for researchers who value individuality and excitement
BACK GROUND
I thought we could update the lab ware (work clothes) that I often see at laboratories of Japanese companies. Of course, work clothes are designed with a focus on safety, a sense of unity, and stain resistance, but, at the same time, researchers are creators as well. By putting on that work clothes, I think that researchers will be dyed in uniformity and end up in reducing their creativity. In addition, I always thought that it was necessary not to make bad impression when interacting with outsiders in dirty work clothes.
In the meantime, a client who develops materials for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals has asked us to make creative and playful lab wear. Not only it is comfortable to wear and to move, but also it could excites the people who wear it and the people who see it, makes customers feel closer, make it possible to wear your own style, and can be filled with power just by wearing it. I wanted to make such a lab wear.
PROCESS
We examined all sorts of work wears and the current working style of the client. We have pursued functionality and mobility and adopted a highly durable denim fabric based on the chef’s coat that is strong against dangerous work using fire and heat, which is close to the experiment in the lab.
1.Characteristics of chef coat
- Double front cover protects your body from fire and liquid splashes
- Even if the front gets dirty, the inside and the outside can be swapped to maintain a clean appearance to accommodate customers.
- You can choose any inner wears and dress it in your own way with the buttons.
2.Characteristics of denim fabric
- Heat resistance, chemical resistance, and fire resistance.
- Breathable, comfortable to wear and highly stretchable.
- You can enjoy variation over the years and be able to use it for a long time.
Combining these two features, we repeated slight adjustment, such as button position and color while hearing the fitting feeling to the user, and created new lab wear that renews the image of work clothes.
